Please
join us as ULI Senior Resident Fellow Michael D. Beyard discusses
his recently published study, Ten Principles for Rebuilding
Neighborhood Retail, of which all luncheon attendees will
receive a complimentary copy.
As
Beyard points out in his work, retailing in many cities and
inner-ring suburbs has hollowed out, often resulting in streetscapes
with empty storefronts, poor pedestrian environments, and
an undersupply of essential goods and services. Because the
convenient availability of goods and services is a key factor
that people consider when choosing a place to live, a decline
in retail often results in increased residential flight, as
well.
Beyard
lays out a 10-step strategy for rebuilding neighborhood retail-
not only in the inner-city, but also in the suburbs, where
attempts to create urban-like shopping districts can be stymied
by some of the same obstacles that face urban retail redevelopment.
Beyard recognizes that attempts to re-create past glories
of urban neighborhood retail are unrealistic, but demonstrates
that market-based solutions can nonetheless achieve long-term,
sustainable, neighborhood shopping streets. The presentation
will also include an overview of unique and successful new
retail developments from around the world.
