Please join us at the historic Eldorado Ballroom for a presentation by Mr. Alain Lee, Executive Director of Row House Community Development Corporation (Row House CDC), and Mr. Rick Lowe, Founder, Project Row Houses.
Project Row Houses was established in 1993 on the site of 22 abandoned shotgun houses (circa 1930), which have since been rehabilitated. Ten of the twenty-two row houses are dedicated to art, photography, and literary projects, which are installed on a rotating six-month basis. When a group of artists is commissioned, each is given a house to transform in ways that speak to the history and cultural issues relevant to the African-American community. Located in seven houses adjacent to those dedicated to art, The Young Mothers Residential Program provides transitional housing and services for young mothers and their children.
Row House CDC was formed in August 2003 as a sister organization to Project Row Houses, in order to develop housing for low-to-moderate income residents, public spaces, and facilities to preserve and protect the historic character of the Third Ward. Their most recent undertaking, the Hannah Project, began in December 2007, and includes the construction of sixteen new affordable housing units. This project consists of eight white clapboard duplex structures featuring deep front rear porches and standing seam metal roofs that are a contemporary adaptation of the typical shotgun/bungalow architecture of Third Ward.
Following our presentation at the Eldorado Ballroom, we’ll make the short walk over to Project Row Houses and Row House CDC for a brief tour.
