For this year’s annual Young Leaders’ joint event with the Rice Real Estate Club, we welcome Stanford Alexander, Chairman of Weingarten Realty Investors (WRI). Mr. Alexander joined WRI in the early 1950's after completing the Executive Training Program at J. Weingarten, Inc., the family's supermarket chain. Following several promotions in various divisions of the company, he was named President of the realty company in 1962. In 1997, he was appointed Chairman and CEO and served as the company's Chief Executive Officer until December 31, 2000. Mr. Alexander’s leadership propelled WRI into a major real estate investment trust, while his keenness and watchful eye during the economic downturn of 1980’s brought about WRI’s success, unlike many other real estate companies which floundered and saw great losses. Founded in 1948 with two part-time employees and approximately $60,000 in cash, today, WRI’s total market capitalization is approximately $3 billion with its common shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange, 17 regional offices, 270 employees, and a portfolio of 415 properties, including 335 neighborhood and community shopping centers and 80 industrial properties.
