The Urban Land Institute offers members an exclusive opportunity to join a conversation with Houston trailblazers—local business legends who have reached the top of their professions. Welcome W. Wilson, Sr. has been in real estate development and finance since 1958. He is Chairman of GSL Welcome Group, ranked #11 on the Houston Business Journal’s list of Top Commercial Property Owners. He also serves as Chairman of River Oaks Financial Group, Inc., a mortgage banking, real estate development, and brokerage firm. Mr. Wilson is Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Houston System. The UH System comprises four universities and 59,000 students, and the central campus plans to grow from 8 million to 15 million square feet, with one project alone valued at $110 million underway, and more than $233 million in expansion planned over the next five years. Mr. Wilson has been the Chief Executive Officer of real estate firms, which have developed over 1,000 apartment units, multiple shopping centers, downtown office buildings, several hotels, and over 8,000 subdivision lots. His past business activities include being Chairman of three financial institutions in Houston. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was Chairman of Aberdeen Petroleum Corporation, an American Stock Exchange Company, and director and second largest shareholder of the Houston Astros Baseball team. Bill Boyar, Chairman of Boyar & Miller, has represented investors and developers in the commercial real estate industry on a national and international level for over 30 years, and will moderate the conversation with Mr. Wilson.
