News & Events April 16-19 Gulf Coast Green Building Symposium & Consumer Expo Sustainable Communities Houston is on its way to becoming a national leader in green building. It boasts over 20 projects in the Greater Houston Area certified by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (or LEED®) rating system. Mayor Bill White and the Greater Houston Partnership have publicly committed to promoting green building and sustainable development, and the Clinton Climate Initiative is assisting Houston commercial owners to drastically reduce their energy consumption. In addition, all City owned projects over 5,000 square feet must meet LEED Silver green building certification standards. Also, Rice University and the University of Houston recently established policies requiring all new construction to meet LEED standards, and the Mayor’s Youth Council is actively involved in engaging area youth in the first annual Sustainable Energy and Green Building Expo co-hosted by Gulf Coast Green and the City of Houston. Both the Symposium and the Expo are conducted as green events.
