Infrastructure 2008: A Competitive Advantage is the second of the Urban Land Institute’s annual reports on international infrastructure, completed in partnership with Ernst & Young. Please join us as ULI Senior Resident Fellow Ed McMahon presents the findings of the report, a copy of which will be provided to all luncheon attendees. While last year’s report examined broad issues facing countries and regions globally, this year’s update focuses the importance of infrastructure to a city or a country’s economic competitiveness. ULI commissioned research on 23 metropolitan areas—including Houston —to determine whether their long range plans are capable of accommodating the large population increases expected over the next 30 years.
Following Mr. McMahon’s presentation will be Mr. Jeff Taebel from the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC), who will discuss an innovative approach being taken by H-GAC that responds to many of the trends outlined in the ULI report. In light of rising construction costs and an uncertain funding outlook at the federal and state levels, it will become increasingly difficult to keep up with congestion in our fast-growing region. In its 2035 Regional Transportation Plan, H-GAC established a framework for a more sustainable approach to regional mobility. One key concept in the plan is to establish a network of Livable Centers- places where people can travel between several destinations without having to use their cars. This overview of the program will include currently authorized projects and opportunities for future partnerships.
